Roasted Bone Marrow
Marrow Bones – Not just for the Dog apparently!
As a part of my Primal Journey I decided that we would be more adventurous with our food and try things we never have before.
Recently the guys over at Whole9 posted a picture of Roasted Bone Marrow with Sweet Potato slices – It actually looked delicious! We’ve never tried it on its own before & always assumed they were only meant to be eaten by dogs.
I did a bit of research into it as I’d never considered roasting it as part of a meal before:
Why Bone Marrow?
Apparently it was probably the first source of brain food for our distant ancestors, even before we learnt to hunt we would feast on the pink goo that was inside the bones of fallen prey.
This addition of animal fat and protein helped improve the quality of our diet by making digestion a lot easier thus diverting our energy resources away to making the big clever brains we have today.
Bone marrow is very energy dense; three and a half ounces contain 488 calories, 51 grams of fat and 7 grams of protein!

We were already planning a trip over to the Butchers to pick up some more bacon (shock) so we grabbed a bag full of bones and they were kind enough to slice them lengthways for us so it would be easier to get at the juicy marrow! The lady behind the counter did ask if they were for my dog at first ha!
I found a ton of recipes online but most just said to roast it on it’s own for the best flavor so I decided our first run would be just tasting just the marrow itself. Unsurprisingly most of these recipes recommended bread as an accompaniment so I ended up going for the sweet potato slices just big enough to scoop the marrow onto.
Here is how I did it:
- Put the Marrow Bone pieces in an oven proof roasting pan – make sure it has sides as some fat will escape!
- Place tray in oven preheated to 450F
- Roasting should be done in about 20 minutes, make sure all the pink has gone and the marrow is quite loose. If it’s melted away too much it’s been overcooked!
Verdict
Well seeing as we were both sucking on the bones after finishing what we could reach, I’d say it was a hit!
It was so yummy on top of the potato slices it just made them melt in your mouth.
I don’t know if it was a Placebo affect but we both felt great for the following day, so much energy and was in a fantastic mood, ah who knows! I’ll try again soon with a little variation.
And before you call me cruel, I did save one for the dog as a daytime treat at Mike’s office.
Do you have any good recipes that use marrow? I’d love to try out something different or just a seasoning that goes well with it.
